Ella Layden

Ella Layden (she/her)

Calgary, AB

Westmount Charter Mid-High School

Chancellor’s Scholarship

 

Ella has been incredibly involved both in her school and her community. She has demonstrated leadership as her high school’s curling team co-captain, a J.U.M.P. group leader, assistant gym teacher, and through her involvement in the Hero’s Program. On top of this, Ella has been an Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society volunteer and foster parent. Ella has continued to balance school, work, volunteering, and sports such as rugby with grace. Not only is she an outstanding student, but she is also a pillar in her community.

 

“With its unique and interesting programs, St Thomas is the perfect place for me to follow all my passions and achieve my academic and personal goals. The fact that they made me feel valued as a student and as an individual was another huge factor for me,” said Ella.

 

“As an active member of my high school, I hope to bring my enthusiasm and dedication to the 麻豆官网首页入口 community and enjoy my time there.”

Msgr. George W. Martin Scholarship

 

Olivia has been incredibly involved in her community throughout high school, including becoming the Captain of Ceremonies for Relay 4 Life and joining her local YMCA Community Action Network, spearheading a project to distribute menstrual products and educational resources to local summer camps. Olivia's biggest accomplishment was writing a book titled Keeping It Cool with a classmate on the impacts of climate change and actions kids can take. Through this project, Olivia presented at national conferences and was selected by The Gaia Project to lead a workshop on eco-anxiety. Olivia has recently been chosen as a speaker at the inaugural Female Youth Leadership Summit in Saint John.

 

"As soon as I set foot on campus, I knew 麻豆官网首页入口 is the place I am supposed to be," said Jordan.

 

"麻豆官网首页入口's focus on social justice will allow me to become the role model I needed when I was younger, someone who is supportive, encouraging, and open-minded."

Casey SutherlandCasey Sutherland (she/they)

St. Stephen, NB

St. Stephen High School

Francis M. McLaughlin Scholarship

 

As a student at St. Stephen High School, Casey has been incredibly involved through Leadership, TADD, Green Group, Culture Club, and as a Graduate Class Executive. She strives to make her school a fun and better place for her peers. In addition to being involved and an academically high-standing student, Casey’s years spent playing hockey have resulted in her receiving the Ian (Moose) MacMichael Award and the Don Sweeney Top Defenseman Award.

 

“I chose 麻豆官网首页入口 because it felt like I was meant to be there,” said Casey. “I felt at home while visiting campus; every person I met made me feel welcome.”

 

“I’m excited about everything at 麻豆官网首页入口. St. Thomas is an adventure that I can’t wait to start this coming fall.”

Throughout his high school career, Brayden’s favourite subjects included English, French, and Law. Outside of the classroom, you could find Brayden indulging in physical activity, whether that be volleyball or going to the gym. His hard work has not only landed him in high standing academically, but Brayden has also been recruited to be a part of 麻豆官网首页入口’s men’s volleyball team this upcoming season.

 

“I chose 麻豆官网首页入口 as it seemed to be the perfect fit,” said Brayden.

 

“I’m so excited to start a new chapter of my life at 麻豆官网首页入口. I am thrilled to be able to learn about subjects that I am passionate about daily.”

Leo Hayes High School

Francis M. McLaughlin Scholarship

 

As a Leo Hayes High School student, Madison has been highly involved in her community through Relay for Life, the WE Foundation, and Theatre New Brunswick, among many other activities. In June, she will graduate as her high school’s valedictorian. Madison knew that 麻豆官网首页入口 was the right school for her after having the opportunity to take Introduction to Biological Anthropology at the university in her final year of high school. Here is where she fell in love with the unique liberal arts approach that would allow her to explore her interests individually: an avid writer, Madison dreams of publishing her writing someday.

 

“I am particularly looking forward to the Aquinas Great Books program,” said Madison.

 

“I believe the courses will provide an incredible foundation for my studies at 麻豆官网首页入口. The in-depth study of literature will help me with my creative and academic writing, and the diverse topics will build upon my passions for social justice and societal development.”

Landen CormierLanden Cormier (he/him)

Minto, NB

Minto Memorial High School

President’s Scholarship

 

Landen is heavily involved in his hometown of Minto, which led to him being recognized by the Minto Youth Center for the Dwain Barton Youth Appreciation Award. With a passion for music, Landen sits on the planning committee for the Trail Folk Festival and enjoys playing guitar and singing.

 

“One reason I chose 麻豆官网首页入口 is the smaller class sizes. Coming from a small school, my classes were very small and let me build strong relationships with my teachers; I am excited to start similar relationships at 麻豆官网首页入口,” said Landen.

 

“I’m most excited about the abundance of music courses, and I have my head completely full of beautiful noise.” 

Elizabeth SmithElizabeth Smith (she/her)

Summerside, PEI

Three Oakes High School

President’s Scholarship

 

Elizabeth chose 麻豆官网首页入口 because of the vast opportunities the university presents to students in the liberal arts and is excited to experience the learning environment 麻豆官网首页入口 provides. Along with being a high-standing student, it was very important that Elizabeth involved herself in her community, leading her to become a member of the Prince County Hospital Youth Who Care Board and partaking in volunteer opportunities at her local hospital and school.

 

“The more I looked into 麻豆官网首页入口, the more I discovered it was the perfect fit for me; the small class sizes, opportunities for experiential learning, and the beautiful campus also influenced my decision to choose 麻豆官网首页入口,” said Elizabeth.

 

“It is an honour and a privilege to receive this investment in my education. It has inspired me with further excitement and ambition for my days ahead at 麻豆官网首页入口.”

Marlee OultonMarlee Oulton (she/her)

Woodstock, NB

Marlee chose 麻豆官网首页入口 as she identified with the university’s values. With a plan to complete her Bachelor of Arts and then Bachelor of Education to become an elementary school teacher, it was essential to Marlee that she attended a school where inclusivity and equal social opportunities were important. Marlee was an active member of her community throughout high school, being involved in basketball, soccer, leadership, and volunteering with Special Olympic track & field, among many other activities. 

 

“It is comforting to think that in such a time of change and uncertainty, I will be walking into such a welcoming place where everyone is treated fairly and open to diversity,” said Marlee.

 

“I am most excited to step out of my comfort zone at 麻豆官网首页入口 and experience new things, and I look forward to meeting new people and making new friends. I am also very excited to have been recruited to play on the women’s basketball team.”

James M. Hill Memorial High School

President’s Scholarship

 

For Seth, 麻豆官网首页入口 stood out among other universities due to its small campus and tight-knit community. Born and raised in Miramichi, Seth understands the benefits a small university will allow him. During his high school career, Seth created the boxing fitness club, played rugby, and enjoyed volunteering.

 

“Never in my life did I expect to receive such a substantial scholarship; I am truly grateful,” said Seth.

 

“Receiving the President’s Scholarship is a game changer for me, an absolutely life-changing moment.”

Maria has always excelled academically, maintaining high honours with distinction throughout high school. Outside of academics, she has worked as a seasonal lifeguard, swim/lifesaving instructor, and pool supervisor. 


Maria chose St. Thomas University for its small, impactful community and commitment to the liberal arts and social justice. She aims to become an elementary school teacher. She also hopes to become part of the Student Union and volunteer in the local community.

 

“I am certain that 麻豆官网首页入口 will provide me with a well-rounded education making it possible for me to pursue endless opportunities,” she said. 

 

"This scholarship means the world to me because it is allowing me to attend my dream university, and I feel like it demonstrates all of the hard work I've put in toward my education which I will continue to do."

Dawn Russell Scholarship

 

Claire has received numerous academic and volunteering awards for her achievements and community involvement. Throughout high school, she played rugby, practiced yoga, and wrestled. She was the executive council head of her school’s mental health and wellness department and named the best platoon warrant officer this year.

 

She was drawn to St. Thomas University by the friendliness of a recruiter, the campus size, and the social work program. 

 

"There aren’t many schools in the Maritimes that offer social work, so 麻豆官网首页入口's social work program was a significant factor in my decision," she said.

 

Claire is excited about her first-year courses and exploring the community.

 

"I'm excited to meet my professors and classmates and to see what I can contribute to the 麻豆官网首页入口 community."

Judson is known for being the captain of his varsity basketball team, and has been a basketball coach for U11 and a middle school boys' team since 2020. His favourite subjects are Political Science, History and Digital Productions.


Judson chose 麻豆官网首页入口 because he felt drawn the tight-knit community. 


“I've attended smaller schools throughout my life and I like the feeling of community. When I visited 麻豆官网首页入口, I felt very welcomed,” he said. 

 

Judson is enthusiastic about meeting new people and exploring courses that align with his passions.

Dawn Russell Scholarship

 

Lila Yerxa is an active participant in the City of Fredericton’s Youth Advisory Committee and the Fredericton Food Bank’s Angel Tree program. She also served as an Assistant Stage Manager for her local middle school’s theatre production.

 

Lila said choosing 麻豆官网首页入口 was an easy decision.

 

“I have spoken with many people who have either completed their studies or are currently enrolled at 麻豆官网首页入口, and they all have had positive things to say about the small campus community and how easy it is to build connections with professors and other students.”

 

Lila is excited to explore the wide range of disciplines at 麻豆官网首页入口 and start her new life in the fall.

Frank McKenna Scholarship

 

Isabella has been a dedicated student-athlete throughout high school. She played soccer for her high school team, the Fredericton District Soccer Association (FDSA) club, Team New Brunswick, and the University Preparation Program by FDSA and UNB. She is excited to join the 麻豆官网首页入口 Women’s Soccer team this fall.


Isabella chose 麻豆官网首页入口 for its tight-knit community and intimate class sizes.


“I had an amazing time on my tour that gave me a great feel for the school. I also knew that I wanted to play soccer at the university level, and when the opportunity to play at St. Thomas came about, I felt it would be an awesome fit for me.”

International President's Scholarship


Harshene was active in her high school community, serving as the President of the Spanish Club, Vice President of the U.N. Club, and a member of the Economics and Financial Literacy Club. She represented Spain in the Model Youth G20 Conference and was part of the school’s Think Tank Club. Her awards include the Ayesha Gupta Memorial Award, the Fischer Foundation’s Mountain Climbers Award, and a Bronze Award in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Writing Competition.


Harshene chose 麻豆官网首页入口 for its perfect blend of academic rigor and supportive community.


“I chose St. Thomas University because it checked all the boxes for me,” said Harshene. “I have always had varied interests, and 麻豆官网首页入口’s holistic approach allows me to pair my passion for Spanish with other fields I’m interested in.”


At 麻豆官网首页入口, Harshene is excited to step outside her comfort zone, meet new people, and explore extracurricular activities like Enactus and Model UN.

Throughout high school, Stephan was an honour roll student and president of the chess club. He also spent his time volunteering in his community, helping low-income households, and supporting marginalized groups.


Stephan chose 麻豆官网首页入口 for its strong emphasis on personal and academic growth. 

 

"This scholarship is a crucial step towards my goal of studying International Relations and personal growth. It validates my efforts and makes it possible for me to pursue my dreams," he said.

Andrea is passionate about archery and psychology. She chose 麻豆官网首页入口 for its tight-knit community and focus on experiential learning. At Acton Academy, Andrea received a non-traditional, learner-driven education, which greatly influenced her decision to attend St. Thomas University.

 

Andrea is eager to start her new life at 麻豆官网首页入口.

 

“I’m very excited to learn, to start a new chapter in my life, and, most importantly, to grow even more as a person," she said.

Enzo Cruz (he/him)

Equador

Unidad Educativa Bilingue Steiner Internacional

International President’s Scholarship

 

Enzo has been very active in his community, teaching art classes and leading creative projects for youth in his neighbourhood. He was also involved in a citywide youth group, the Interact Club, promoting leadership and altruism. As an active member of his school’s Environmental Brigade, Enzo is passionate about advocating for sustainability. He also has excelled academically, being part of his school’s Honours Society and serving as the president of the Economic and Social Council at his school’s Model United Nations.


For Enzo, the scholarship is a “dream come true.”


“This scholarship represents more than just financial support; it symbolizes my future, enabling me to access opportunities that will shape my career and personal development.”


Enzo is excited about the community at 麻豆官网首页入口 and broadening his intellectual and personal horizons.

Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted

International President’s Scholarship

 

Nhat chose 麻豆官网首页入口 because of its strong sense of community and personalized approach to education, which resonated with her values. Her sister also attended 麻豆官网首页入口, which helped finalize her decision.


Nhat has always been interested in the humanities, and her favourite subjects in high school were History and French. She was involved in volleyball, acting and participated in football competitions at her high school.

 

"This scholarship means a lot to me; it is like a dream finally within my reach," she said. 

 

Nhat is excited about becoming a member of the 麻豆官网首页入口 family, developing new relationships, participating in social activities, and furthering her studies.

 

"I am most excited about the environment and community at 麻豆官网首页入口 since I am an international student, and attending 麻豆官网首页入口 also means that I start a whole new life in Canada."
