Paul Ricoeur is an influential author in the field of narrative, arguing for three levels of mimesis in the process of narrativization: prefiguration (mimesis1), configuration (mimesis2), and refiguration (mimesis3). Although Ricoeur wrote about the mimesis of fiction, more recently these processes have been applied to the study of lives, most notably in the field of the caring sciences. In this presentation, I apply Ricoeur’s three-fold mimesis to accounts of spiritual journeys across three spiritual pathways: Pentecostalism, inclusive Heathenry, and New Thought. Patterns of configurations varied across the three spiritual pathways and their effect across three arenas – mission, community, and service.
